What an hour is for

Six jobs a perennial bed needs

Every job is billed by the hour, and a visit usually mixes two or three. The season decides which.

  • Japanese maples and a white hydrangea in a tidy residential garden bed

    Cut back and tidy

Last year's stems come down at the right week, and the beds are left clean enough to see the crowns.

  • A gloved hand holds a plant with its roots exposed above terracotta pots

    Divide and replant

Crowded clumps get lifted, split and set back at the right spacing, with spares for a neighbor.

  • A person in a checked shirt reaches into a bed of purple and pink daisies

    Stake, deadhead and pinch

Tall plants are held up before they fall, spent flowers come off, and the late bloomers are pinched back.

  • A hand pushes a yellow trowel into soil beside pink flowers in a garden bed

    Weed and edge

Weeds out by hand, root and all, and a clean line cut where the bed meets the walk or the grass.

  • Hands spread dark mulch on the soil around a young tree

    Mulch and compost

Compost worked in, mulch laid thin and off the stems, bought at cost with the receipt.

  • A hand places a flowering plant into a stone urn beside trowels and a hand fork

    Pots, bulbs and swaps

Containers refreshed, bulbs planted in fall, and a plant swapped when something just isn't working.

Not on the list

Four jobs I'll point you elsewhere for

Saying no keeps the hours honest.

  • Lawns

No mowing, aerating or seeding. I work in the beds, not the grass.

  • Sprays

No pesticides or herbicides. That is a licensed applicator's job.

  • Large trees

Anything I can't reach from the ground with a pole pruner goes to an arborist.

  • Walls and drainage

Stonework, grading and drains are a different trade with different tools.

Questions

About the work

Do you plant new beds?

I add plants to the beds you already have, and I'll swap one that isn't working. A whole new bed is a design job, and I'll say so.

Who buys the plants and compost?

I do, at cost, and you get the receipt. Nothing is marked up, and nothing is bought without your text saying yes.

Can you keep what I don't want touched?

Yes. Text me the plants to leave alone, with a photo, and they stay as they are.

Where does the clippings pile go?

Into your yard-waste bags or bin for city pickup. If it's more than your bin will take, I text you before I haul it.

Book by text

Send the beds, I'll send the hours

A photo, your street, and the plants you want left alone.

Texts first, calls second. Beds are on the schedule once you reply to my hours.
